Chat
In Assistant's Chat, you can have a general conversation, or ask questions related to uploaded documents or an existing collection of documents. You can do this interchangeably in a single conversation, for instance starting off asking about cooking recipes, then switching to document-focused questions, then returning to general chitchat.
Starting a Chat
From the Chat start screen, you can follow these steps to start a conversation:
- Navigate to the Chat box at the bottom of the screen.
- Ask anything!
- Click on the "Send" button or press the "Enter" button on your keyboard.
The generated answer will appear at the top of your screen.
Asking about Documents
To ask questions that are related to documents in your files and folders, you must first upload your documents by following these steps:
- Click on the "Upload document" button.
- Drag and drop up to three documents into the "Upload document" popup, or select them from your files and folders.
- Click on the "Upload" button to upload the document(s).
The "Documents" icon will show your uploaded documents. You can click on this to inspect the document names.
Once the document upload is finished, you can continue your conversation as normal!
Please note: If you upload a document while you have a selected Collection of documents, the newly uploaded document(s) will deselect the Collection as a source for Chat.
The Assistant currently places the following limits on file uploads:
- You can upload up to three documents at a time.
- The following document formats are supported: .docx, .pdf, .txt
- PDF files must have maximum 100 pages or maximum siz 20 MB.
- For TXT and DOCX files, the maximum supported size is 2 MB.
- Assistant currently supports text extraction only from PDF files that contain selectable text. Scanned documents requiring optical character recognition (OCR) are not supported at this time.
Removing documents
To remove a document, click on the "Documents" icon in the chat box, and then either click the cross next to a file name to remove that specific file, or click on "Remove all" to remove all the files:
The Assistant has some limitations when reasoning about documents
- The Assistant will only consider the document(s), if uploaded, in the most recent question – it will not remember documents from 3 messages ago, unless those documents are the currently uploaded documents.
- The Assistant does not know about filenames, so will not understand if you ask a question that refers to a document by file name.
- The Assistant does not know if previous answers were provided as a result of document searching, or as a result of open conversation.
- The Assistant does not know how many documents you’ve uploaded.
Asking about Collections
To ask questions that are related to an existing collection of documents, you must first select the collection:
You can then continue your conversation as normal!
If you would like to switch from questions about documents to general conversation, then you can help the Assistant by removing your documents or deselecting the collection.
References
If the Assistant uses your uploaded documents or collections to generate an answer, then you can see the references by clicking on the "Show references" button:
The references will be shown in the References tab on the right side of the screen, with the most relevant reference highest. You can click on the reference to see its location within the document it comes from:
If the Assistant has not used documents to answer the question, then it will not disaply a "Show references" button. It will also not disaply the "Show references" button when it has answered a question about the whole document, e.g., “What is this document about?” This is because the summary is holistic, and does not necessarily use specific sentences.
Copying Answers
To copy an answer, you can click on the "Copy" icon:
Conversation History
The Assistant stores a history of the conversation so far, which you can see when you scroll up in the application. However, when generating an answer the Assistant only uses the previous 5 user messages and the previous 4 assistant messages. Therefore, if you ask the Assistant about an answer more than 5 messages ago, the Assistant will not have this knowledge.
Deleting Part of the Conversation
To delete a user message and the corresponding assistant reply, you can click the cross icon next to the user message:
Deleting a message from the conversation changes the conversation history irreversibly. This new, updated history is what the Assistant will use to generate new responses, up to the above-mentioned 5 most recent interactions.
Deleting the Entire Conversation
You can delete the entire conversation, including all uploaded files by clicking on the "Clear all" button in the Chat box:
Feedback
You can provide positive or negative feedback on specific answers, to indicate whether the answer matches the expectation or not. For on-premise deployments, feedback will be stored locally. You can extract it and send it to us to provide your feedback.
Positive Feedback
To give positive feedback, click on the "Like" icon below the answer:
Negative Feedback
To give negative feedback, click on the "Dislike" icon below the answer: A popup will appear to provide additional optional information:
You can select multiple feedback options:
- Made-up / Incorrect
- Too short / Incomplete
- Bad grammar
- Biased / Discriminating
- Too long / Lengthy
- Irrelevant content
You can also add additional details in the "Other" field.
